Looking after your Silver Jewellery

It is very important to care for your sterling silver. It can quickly start to tarnish and nothing can stop sterling silver from tarnishing but this process can be slowed and with regular cleaning your jewellery can be kept looking beautiful. Tarnishing is a natural process caused by chemicals reacting with the silver. Causes include perfume, hairspray, deodorant, moisturisers, chlorine, makeup, high levels of air pollution and high humidity climates. We also recommend removing your jewellery when taking a bath or shower and when swimming.

Regular cleaning will keep your silver jewellery in tip-top condition, looking like new and your sterling silver jewellery will last for years to come.

Sterling Silver is a soft metal and we therefore do not recommend wearing jewellery when exercising or to sleep in.

Cleaning Sterling Silver Jewellery

We recommend cleaning sterling silver with a good quality silver cleaning cloth. When cleaning your earrings, necklace or bracelet, lightly rub the silver with the cloth to remove the build up of dirt and any tarnishing. Regular cleaning is required to keep your sterling silver jewellery looking like new. Do not use a silver cleaning cloth on plated areas ie: on items that may have yellow gold or rose gold plating. Rubbing plated areas will cause the plating to wear away.

For cleaning necklace chains, jewellery that is very tarnished or for items that are too tricky to clean with a silver cloth, we would recommend using a silver dip. The dip we use is Talk Town Silver Dip. Always read the instructions for using silver dip but it usually only takes a few seconds in the dip to remove the unwanted tarnishing. Rinse the item using water and then dry.
